Welcoming a long list of the most expensive drugs, like Lipitor (generic Viagra), Zyrtec (generic Cialis), and Viagra, has led to a number of pharmaceutical companies offering cheaper generic alternatives to the brand-name drug.
The list of such drugs includes the ones that are the most expensive and most often prescribed, according to an analysis of data from the Drug Utilization and Usage Project of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, or CMSMS.
The analysis, published by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), examined data for Medicare Part D, a program that covers drugs that are not covered by other Part D programs. It was led by Kaiser Permanente, the group that makes the drugs.
"The data showed that generic medicines that were covered at $1 per prescription were less expensive than brand-name medicines," the study authors wrote in the piece.
The drugs covered included several generic versions of the drugs that are also covered by Part D. In addition to the drugs covered, the analysis also included other drugs, such as antiretroviral drugs (HIV protease inhibitors), antidepressants, and the drugs of choice when prescribing the drugs for other conditions.
In the study, the authors noted that generic drugs "were covered at about $1 per prescription, and the number of medications covered at the end of the study was similar to that of Part D, but the percentage of the drugs that were covered at the end of the study was much higher than the average of Part D."
The results from the study were presented in the January issue ofJAMA Internal Medicine, a medical journal and health information technology publication.
"The results of the study show that generic medicines with the same active ingredients and strengths were covered at about the same prices as the brand-name medicines in the Medicare Part D program," the authors wrote. "The results also indicate that the amount of generic drugs that were covered at the end of the study was far less than the amount that was covered at the end of the Medicare Part D program."
The analysis also found that generic drugs with the same active ingredients, or strengths, were covered at the same prices as the brand-name drugs in Part D.
This is not the first time that pharmaceutical companies are offering cheaper generic versions of drugs that are prescribed to treat conditions like erectile dysfunction or prostate cancer. In 2011, an estimated 2.1 million prescriptions for Viagra were dispensed nationwide, according to CMSMS.
In 2013, the FDA approved a generic version of Lipitor, the little blue pill that is the best-selling drug in the world. The drug has a lower incidence of cardiovascular events than the branded Lipitor.
"That's because the FDA approved Lipitor in 1999, and it was a little bit different," said Dr. David R. Shomon, a spokesman for the FDA. "We're talking about a drug that was approved before Viagra, but it's just one that's available in a much higher dosage, which is the same kind of dosage, which is why we have a brand-name drug, and then you can't get it in the U. S. because we have to pay for the generics."
Another problem with the results from the study was that the drug was taken by people who had a history of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and other risk factors.
"That was the most common side effect of the drug, and it's a big part of why we found that there was a significant association between the drug and a lower risk of heart attack in people who had a history of heart disease," said Shomon.
The study also noted that patients who had a history of heart attack or stroke or who had chest pain that was related to heart disease were more likely to be prescribed the drugs. In addition, the study found that patients with diabetes and those who had a history of heart disease were more likely to receive the drugs than people with other risk factors.
As for the other drugs, the researchers said they found that the drugs were not covered at the same prices as the brand-name drugs in Part D.
"What's interesting is that the FDA approved Lipitor at a much higher price than it is in Part D," said Dr. David J. Hirsch, a senior author of the study.
"We're really just getting started with the drug," said Hirsch. "It's one of the most expensive drugs, which is a lot of the time it's not covered at all because it's a very expensive medication. We've got to be very clear with our patients.
